Sisters Of Our Lady Of Namur

The Congregation of the Sisters of Notre-Dame (officially in French: Congrégation Soeurs de Notre-Dame de Namur) is a female Catholic religious congregation of pontifical right, founded by Julia Billiart on February 2, 1804 in Amiens, France. The nuns of this institute are known as the Sisters of Notre-Dame de Namur or simply the Dames de Namur, and they add the initials: S.N.D.

History[edit]

Julia Billiart, with the help of the Countess of Gézaincourt, Marie-Louise-Françoise Blin de Bourdon, founded in Amiens, on February 2, 1804, the Congrégation Notre-Dame, in order to instruct and educate in the Christian faith the young girls and young people of the city. In 1807, the house of Namur (a city of the First Empire at the time) was founded, which became the parent company of the institute.

On September 8, 1818, the Sisters of Notre-Dame received the approval of the Bishop of Namur, Charles-François-Joseph Pisani. While pontifical recognition was obtained on June 28, 1844, by the decree of praise of Pope Gregory XVI. [4]

Activities[edit]

The Ladies of Namur devote themselves to Christian instruction and the education of young people, through schools of all levels and universities. [5][6]

In 2011, the Congregation had 1,602 nuns and approximately 490 houses, present in Belgium, Brazil, the United States, France, Haiti, Kenya, Italy, Japan, Nicaragua, Nigeria, Peru, in the United Kingdom, the Democratic Republic of Congo, South Africa, South Sudan and Zimbabwe.
