Backwater Valves

A check valve (sometimes called a check valve or sewer back-up valve) is a valve that you can install in your sewer line that is designed to allow water or sewage to escape flow in one direction only, that is to say out of your house. Whenever there is a sudden heavy rain, city sewer lines can become overwhelmed, causing water or sewage to back up into your home. If there is a back-up from the sewer system and you have a backwater valve in place, the sewage will not be able to flow back into your home. The cost of retrofitting a backwater valve can range from $1,000 to $2,000. If a new home has plumbing fixtures located below street level, the National Plumbing Code requires the installation of a backwater valve. A backwater valve will prevent water or sewage from flowing into your home if the main sewer line becomes overloaded. In most cases, you can check if it is working properly by looking through the transparent cover of the check valve access box. If water or sewage begins to flow back into the house, these floaters cause the shutter to lift and close, preventing anything from entering your home. When the water stops coming back towards the house, gravity allows the shutter to fall back to the open position, allowing water and sewage to resume flowing out of the house. If this backwater valve is being installed in an existing home, instead of being installed in the original construction, a plumbing permit from your municipality is required. Without a properly placed and installed backwater valve, sewage could enter the basement through a floor drain, sinks, tubs and toilets. If you have a properly positioned and installed check valve, you shouldn't have many problems, as long as you maintain it properly. Check valves are usually easily accessible, and with a clear top you should be able to see if water is flowing freely or if something is stuck. If everything is clear and the city sewers back up during a major storm, your backwater valve will close, which is exactly what you want to happen. But when this valve is closed, water cannot get out of your house either. Since none of this water will be able to escape once the backwater valve is closed, you could end up flooding your own home.
