What Is Engineered Wood Flooring Made Of?
One of the most common questions we get asked at Wood and Beyond is "what are engineered wood floors made of?". In fact, engineered wood flooring is arguably one of the most misunderstood flooring products on the market today and we think that's a real shame. With some really significant benefits over solid wood, it's a flooring solution worth considering, but often confused with laminate flooring, which to us is heartbreaking! The basic structure of engineered parquetEngineered parquet is made up of 3 to 12 layers of plywood. It is this bonded core board that makes engineered wood flooring so different from solid wood flooring. For example, a 3-ply panel will have a single core panel, base layer and top layer or real wood slat. The problem with many 3-ply engineered wood flooring solutions is that the center panel, where the tongue and groove fit together, can become flimsy, so generally speaking, if your budget allows, you should choose a multi-layer panel. As already mentioned, the core panel of engineered wood flooring is made by gluing layers upon layers of plywood together. Although a sliced or sawn veneer gives a more natural look to the wood, if you're looking for a more dramatic grain effect, it may be better to choose a rotary cut. As you can imagine, anything made up of a combination of different layers of plywood that are glued together using a strong adhesive will be stronger than a single piece of wood of the same thickness. Under these conditions, solid wood expands and contracts significantly, but engineered wood floors are much less affected. Thanks to the way engineered hardwood floors are made, the core panel remains stable, in all but really extreme conditions. In the same way as solid parquet, engineered parquet is made in different thicknesses. That said, there are actually two elements to the thickness of an engineered wood flooring panel; the overall thickness of the panel and the thickness of the top layer or slats. No matter what species, grade or finish you want, you should be able to find it in engineered wood flooring, just as you can in solid wood.
