How To Control Root Maggots In The Garden
The small, brownish-red pupae of root maggots overwinter on the top, one to five inches of soil, near roots and other plant debris that were infested the previous year or in the ground. Adult onion fly (Delia antiqua) Tomasz Klejdysz/Getty ImagesAppearance at different stages
Root maggot eggs are about one-eighth inch, white, and oval. In older plants, discolored, light green or yellow and/or wilted leaves and stunted growth may indicate that root maggots have already damaged roots by boring numerous feeding tunnels in stems, roots and underground bulbs. Crop rotation
Crop rotation is crucial to prevent root maggots, otherwise the overwintering population in the soil will be an easy target.
Wireworm Woes: Identification And Control
With a diverse choice of common crops as their target, these wireworms seek out and chew on plant roots. And while it may take some work to get rid of these soil pests, I'll give you a list of options that will help you control wireworms. Common name(s) wireworm, wireworms, elaters, serpentine beetles, spring beetles, skipjack, potato worm Scientific name(s) Several species of the family Elateridae Family Elateridae Origin Worldwide, the more often in growing areas Plants Affected Agricultural crops and grasses. Commonly affects corn, wheat seed before and during seed germination, untreated corn and other grain crops in addition to crucifers, root vegetable crops such as carrots, potatoes, beets and sweet potatoes, vines like beans and cowpeas, trailing plants like melons, and an assortment of others like onions, lettuce, and strawberries. Common remedies Pyrethrin sprays, insect killing granules, crop rotation, plowing larvae on the soil surface, trapping, use of beneficial nematodes to help control soil pests. Common habitats
As wireworms spend their entire larval stage underground, they can be found in, around, or near plant roots. Source: treegrow
Although there are types that feed on particular crops, such as the sugar beet wireworm (Limonius californicus), the vast majority of wireworm damage is on the roots of cereal plants and root crops such as carrots, potatoes or beets. Environmental controls
I like to incorporate beneficial insects into my garden as a form of wireworm control because they can often take care of most pests for me.
Different Types Of Earthworms With Pictures & Facts
These three main types of earthworms are epigeal worms, which are also known as surface dwellers because they live above ground level, endogeic worms, which live below ground, and anecic worms, which live below ground level but explore at ground level and above for food sources. Epigeic earthworms "Epigeic" is the Greek translation for "on the earth", as these worms do not build burrows and instead reside among decaying organic matter on the surface of the soil. Endogenous earthworms "Endogeic" translates from the Greek as "in the earth" and therefore these worms burrow into the upper layers of the soil and rarely come to the surface, preferring instead to literally live in the earth. Earthworm Common Scientific Name: Lumbricus terrestris Family: Lumbricidae Also known as the 'dew worm' or 'lobe worm', this is a species of earthworm native to Western Europe, although that due to the transport of plants and worms for fish bait, this worm is now commonly found in North and South America, Asia, Africa and Oceania.# Video | Braune Würmer In Der Erde

Cutworm
How to effectively identify and control cutworms using proven, organic and least toxic methods. Cutworms attack a wide variety of plants, including beets, cabbage, broccoli, kale and cauliflower. IdentificationCutworm caterpillars (larvae) are stout, soft-bodied, gray or dull brown (1-2 inches long) caterpillars that curl up when at rest or disturbed. Adults are dark gray or brown moths (1-1/2 inch wingspan) with irregular spots or stripes on their wings. In spring, when temperatures warm, they become active and begin feeding on plants at night while remaining hidden during the day. Different species of cutworms climb plants and damage foliage, buds and shoots. Cutworm Control
Losing valuable grafts to cutworms just once is all most people need to implement preventative measures as part of an integrated pest management plan. Despite the fact that it will endanger your pets, children, and the environment, using pesticides against cutworms, Michigan State University Extension reports, is "often unsuccessful."
Preventive measures
Before planting a new garden, remove weeds and plant debris that could feed and harbor developing grubs. Mow as close to the edge of your garden as possible to give less cutworms to feed on and less shelter near your plants. A strip of bare soil three feet wide (or more) between your lawn and your garden plants makes it harder for grubs to get to your plants. Slow the progress of worms, which don't like to navigate dry soil, by watering in the morning and then lightly cultivating your garden paths to a depth of about an inch. Beneficial nematodes released into moist spring soil will attack and destroy cutworms living underground. Diatomaceous earth, the fossilized, abrasive remains of prehistoric sea life, literally allows you to draw a line in the dirt that is deadly to any passing larvae.

Head - usually a dark, often hard capsule at the front of the body. In some larvae, a hard or distinct head may be absent or completely hidden. In some larvae, a hard or distinct head may be absent or completely hidden. Larval insect types image key: section 1 (click for larger image)
SECTION 2: Larvae without segmented thoracic legs
They are highly specialized larvae; most live in water, soil, wood or decaying organic matter.
